The purpose of the Social Rights Accountability Research Project (SRAP)
is to consider how social rights accountability mechanisms in political,
judicial and
international arenas can be more effectively used and improved. The project
will ensure that university research better addresses the needs of communities
using
social rights approaches, and that community practitioners are able to share
their acquired expertise in social rights with students and university
researchers.
It will enhance the capacity of community groups and collaborative researchers
to advocate for social rights before courts and tribunals; assess the impact
of proposed changes to accountability mechanisms in intergovernmental
agreements,
laws, or trade agreements; and put forward practical proposals for enhanced
social rights accountability in all three areas of research.
The Social Rights Accountability Project (SRAP) is a five year research initiative funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council: Community-University Research Alliance. It includes university researchers from the University of Ottawa, Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM), University of Windsor, University of British Columbia, and York University, as well from research partners, Mouvement d'éducation populaire et d'action communautaire du Québec (MéPACQ), National Association of Women and the Law (NAWL) Poverty and Human Rights Project , and the Social Rights Advocacy Centre/Charter Committee on Poverty Issues (CCPI).
